Western Crop Innovations (WCI), established in 1973 as the Field Crop Development Centre and reimagined as a not-for-profit organization in 2024, stands at the forefront of agricultural advancement, not only in Alberta but across Western Canada. About the Opportunity

WCI is looking for a full-time Director of Finance based in Lacombe, AB, with the option for hybrid work.

Reporting to the Executive Director, you will play a pivotal role in leading our financial strategy and maintaining financial health across the organization.

In this position, you will be primarily responsible for overseeing the financial operations, ensuring compliance with accounting standards, and supporting strategic decision-making.

More specifically, your responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Implementing a new accounting platform and overseeing the development of a chart of accounts
  • Establishing performance-to-budget reports and preparing financial forecasts
  • Ensuring accurate record-keeping and managing external audit processes
  • Reporting financial details regularly to management and committees
  • Developing and enforcing financial policies and procedures
  • Providing leadership to WCI’s project accountant
  • Collaborating on external stakeholder presentations

About You

To qualify, you will need a post-secondary degree in accounting or finance and a Chartered Professional Accounting Designation (CPA, CA, CMA, CGA), with 8+ years in accounting and finance, including 2+ years in an executive leadership role.

The following are also required:

  • A valid driver's license
  • A bankruptcy-free record within the past seven years
  • Ability to undergo a criminal record check
  • Must be bondable

The following skills and experience will be strong attributes:

  • Proven experience collaborating with audit committees and Board Chairs to deliver expert financial insights and guidance
  • Strong understanding of non-profit financial frameworks, with skills in audit preparation and regulatory compliance
  • Proficient in managing GST filings and demonstrating a solid grasp of risk management from a financial perspective
  • Adaptable in using various accounting software, enhancing operational efficiency
  • Asset management skills and capital budgeting
  • Background in working with industry associations, with a strong aptitude for program management and stakeholder engagement (asset)
  • Background in agriculture (asset)
  • Understanding of research based business models
